The original pipe organ had detierioted to the point of being unplayable. A decision was made to purchase an electronic organ just to "substitute" until the pipe organ could be restored.  That was in 1983.  Meanwhile Hurricane Hugo caused further damage in 1989.

A chamber restoration is recommended.  Upon inspections in the chamber, it was found that much of the pipe work of the previous pipe organ may be utilized again.

Because many of the pipes added to the organ in North Chamber and installed in the South Chamber are dedicated to the memory of Alumni and Friends of the Citadel, it is suggested that as much of the existing pipework should be used as feasible.  They will provide the depth and foundation to the organ while new pipework will add new harmony, brilliance and variety that is much needed.

The current electronic organ of The Summerall Chapel at the Citadel is insufficient in both tonal resources and acoustic energy to produce what only a pipe organ can achieve for the insights of inspiration quoted above. It hasn’t the ability to fully support the current and potential musical needs of the Chapel, the Citadel and the city of Charleston, SC.  In short, the Summerall Chapel is need of an organ worthy of its magnificent setting, historical significance, its superior acoustical quality and contribution to a Fine Arts program for its surrounding community.
